    Re: A5s on eBay again

Electronics World Magazine had a feature article on the University Horn system in ther bottom right of the catalog page. Sometime in the later 60's if I remember correctly. Talked about its use as you alluded to. Altec may also have had something similar, but EW Magazine was all about University Sound in their artlcle. I think I may still have a copy of it, but it would take a lot of time to find it. Not sure if web searches would be productive, and since I don't have the movie, I can't review it or grab a frame shot from the scene in question.

First, it just plain isn't similar, again you are talking about totally different things. The University is ONE HORN with a lot of drivers. Yes, they saw some military use.

The Altec systems were multiple horns with drivers on each horn. Much bigger, much louder, and much clearer. You cannot compare that University to one of the big Giant Voice systems any more than you can compare a Yugo to a Rolls Royce.

Altec quoted the larger Giant Voice systems at 125 dB at 100 feet...

    Re: A5s on eBay again

Well, determined to find a way out of this dilema, I ordered a copy of Apocalypse Now to scrutinize the scene in question, and I also found the Electronics World Magazine I referred to. September 1968, pages 38 & 39. I will scan and post these later, but the article shows a Cessna and a significantly larger Navy aircraft fitted with the University Sound B-24 PT speaker and their own 1800 watt (3 600 watt paralled)amplifier. Claims of "over 148dB @ 4ft, and 80dB @ two miles." I have a 1968 Altec catalog which has an overview of the Giant Voice. I can scan and post that as well. Just waiting for the movie now. Over 43 years since I thumbed through that issue. 19 years old then.

Author of the article claimed this speaker to be developed during the Korean War for psychological warfare.

Scroll down to about the middle of the page to get to the Viet Nam War section(Psywarrior).I don't think they used Altecs in the Viet Nam War I can't find any real pictures of any although that doesn't mean there weren't any few and far between I think .Movies don't count, that's just Hollywood !

    Re: A5s on eBay again

Movies don't count, that is true. Movies use what props are available.

    All i can say is:

    1. I was in California seeing a big array assembled was told headed for Vietnam.

    2. As the war wound down, I was offered incentives to move lots of 290's since military orders were gonna stop for them.

Were Altecs used in all apps? For that I have to ask, is every car sold a Cadillac?

If anybody finds proof what I was told is wrong, I'd like to see it. But "can't find anything" doesn't impress me. Lots of Altec stuff it's hard to find info on.

Anyway, till some proof I am wrong surfaces I refuse to discuss this any more. If wrong I am quick to admit it and apologize.

I haven't seen a shred of evidence I am wrong.
